He is thinking about joining for 4 years or the reserve for 6 years. I think the reserve might be best because we have 2 kids and alot of animals. How offten will we have to move if he joins full time? ThanksWhat is it like for a navy family ? How long out of a four year term will my husband be gone ?
Generally, deployments are six months long, they come about every year and a half. Prior to the deployment, the ship will go through ';work ups'; meaning that it'll go out for a week end, come back in, go out for a week, come back in, go out for two weeks and come back in, etc., etc.. Once the deployment is complete, they come in for at least a month -- sometimes six months, for rest and repair/rehab. of the ship and crew. Then the schedule starts all over again.
Also generally, a tour is divided up into three years of sea and three years of shore (tour). Any school taken is considered a neutral duty and if the school is one year long (or more), upon completion, you can expect to go to a sea tour. What is it like for a navy family ? Overall, big picture, on average he would be gone about 60% of the time.
Each boat has a different schedule. he might get onto something going into a shipyard for a 2 year overhaul. Os other circumstance where his career might be different from average.
But on average they try to get everyone to be in their homeport 40% of the time.
With 2 kids he might find it difficult to enlist. Right now anything more than 2 dependents requires a waiver. Waivers are becoming almost impossible to get due to the huge numbers of recruits trying to enlist.
Where he's stationed and how his deployments will work all depends on the job he selects. Generally, on sea duty you should plan on him being gone half the time.
no way in hell of knowing that.. each rating has a different sea/shore rotation and each ship has a different deployment rotation. he could be gone all the time.. or never.
you will only move once, generally in your first enlistment as you do NOT go anywhere until he is done with all training.
the average is every 3 years or so.
